ilton Head Island is the
largest barrier island off the east coast of the United States (Long Island is NOT a
barrier Island!), located 43 miles from Savannah Georgia and 95 miles from Charleston,
South Carolina. Southbound motorists can exit on highway 462 (exit 28) from I95 and follow
signs along highways 278 and 170, or exit on exit 8 to 278, which is a four lane highway. Northbound motorists should
use exit 8.
Commuter
airlines offer a direct service to the Island (most originating in Charlotte) or you can
fly in to Savannah or Charleston and rent a car.
he Island has a subtropical climate that is ideally suited for year-round activities and outdoor enjoyment. Sea Pines Plantation alone has miles of scenic bike paths (also nice for jogging and walking), tennis, three golf courses (including Harbor Town links, home of the Heritage) and a superb children's playground located next to Harbor Town, where you can stroll, dine, shop and look at the boats!
There are more than thirty outstanding golf courses either on or just off the island; more than 170 restaurants (at last count) ranging from (as you might expect) wonderful seafood and haute cuisine (Italian, French etc) to fast food, take-out and home delivery. There is also extensive shopping, if that is your pleasure, with two large outlet malls located just over the bridge from the Island. The fishing is superb, bike rentals are available (with delivery and pick-up service, just check the yellow pages and call!). Other activities available include sailing, jet skiing, para sailing and canoeing.
