Musical Theatre Dance Classes

CPDW is excited to offer three new classes for 2017 Fall Semester (September 6-December 16) geared toward those students who have an interest in Musical Theatre and desire to supplement their acting and vocal training with formal dance experience.

Children's Beginning Musical Theatre Dance (ages 7-12); Tuesdays 3:30-4:15 pm

Students in this class will receive an introduction to basics in ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop, as well as learning combinations based on actual choreography from Broadway musicals. Other topics covered will be appropriate dance class and rehearsal etiquette, developing confidence in their abilities, spatial awareness in group movement patterns and formations, conditioning to support singing while dancing, strength-building and flexibility.

Children's Intermediate Musical Theatre Dance (ages 9-14); Fridays, 4:15-5:30 pm

Students who enroll in this class are expected to have prior dance training (a minimum of one year in ballet, jazz, and tap). Classes will focus on honing technique in the various dance styles, including ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop, along with some partnering techniques in both basic ballroom styles, and simple lifts and supported movements. Combinations from Broadway musicals will be taught, as well as introducing unique stylistic elements from various prolific choreographers (i.e., Fosse, de Mille, Robbins, Bennett). Dancers will be encouraged to understand and demonstrate the character of the dance piece (acting while dancing), and will continue to work on conditioning for full use of breath in order to sing and dance. Dancers will also have the opportunity to incorporate props into their dancing.

Adult/Teen Beginning/Intermediate Musical Theatre Dance; Mon & Wed, 8:15-9:00 pm

Students in this class will receive an introduction to basics in ballet, jazz, tap, and hip hop vocabulary (physical and verbal), as well as learning combinations based on actual choreography from Broadway musicals. Students will also be introduced to partnering techniques in both basic ballroom styles, and simple lifts and supported movements. Other topics covered will be appropriate dance class and rehearsal etiquette, developing confidence in their abilities, spatial awareness in group movement patterns and formations, conditioning to support singing while dancing, strength-building and flexibility. Dancers will also have the opportunity to incorporate props into their dancing.
