BETA GLUCAN AND IMMUNE SUPPORT


Many health researchers consider Beta Glucan to be one of the most effective immune enhancing substances ever discovered. The proper term to use for Beta Glucan is Beta 1, 3d glucan. It is a long chain poloysacaride, or in simplier terms a complexed sugar molecule. It is also comprised on many more chains, like 1,6 or 2,3 or 3,6. However it is the 1 3 d chain that has been subject to such a large amount of clinical research.

There has been over 1,600 research studies conducted on Beta glucan. You can find a majority of these studies on www.PubMED.com, the largest medical juornal online archive in the world. The published research studies on this material has been conducted at some of the most prestigious institutions in the world, including Harvard Medical School, Tulane University and the National Cancer Institute. These studies have been conducted on almost every known health condition/disease, and every time it has proven itself to be second to none. It has also been shown to provide beneficial effects in the sports/athletic health fitness field when it comes to workout and injury recovery.

Beta glucan was discovered in the 1940's when a Dr. Louis Pillemer discovered a substance that had immune activating properties. He called it Zymosan. While it did stimulate non-specific immunity response, it was made up of a relatively crude composition made up of a various molecular structures. Years later research by Dr. Nicholas DiLuzio, at Tulane University, isolated the actual immune activating structure, called Beta-1, 3-D glucan. In the 1970's, medical studies began on humans. In 1975 Doctor Peter W. Mansell reported its effects on nodules of malignant skin cancer in patients that were injected with beta-1,3-glucan. This was reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The results were amazing. Joyce Czop Ph.D., a researcher at Harvard, would later go on and discovered specific receptor sites for beta glucan that matched a site on the surface of the macrophage, the "foot solider" of the immune system.

Beta glucan is found throughout nature, the most popular materials it is extracted from is Barley, Oats, Mushrooms and Baker Yeast. Research has shown that the molecular structure of Beta Glucan differs slightly depending on what it is extracted from and this difference produces different beneficial effects on the body. Beta Glucan extracted from Barley and Oats has shown to be beneficial for lowering cholesterol but not to effective for immune support, while mushrooms derived has shown to produce beneficial results concerning cancers. Study after study has shown that Beta Glucan derived from the cell walls of bakers yeast produces the best immune support results as well as all of the rest of the health benefits discussed here.

When Beta 1, 3-D glucan is properly extracted from bakers yeast, it has been shown to be completely safe and non-toxic. Bakers yeast, and their extracts, have been given a GRAS rating. This is one of the highest safety rating a substance can achieve. The specifications for this rating can be found in 21CFR184.1983 -- Sec. 184.1983.

Research has shown that in order for a Beta Glucan product to be effective it must contain a 1,3 d level higher then 80% and contain a low amount of fats and proteins. A large amount of Proteins can cause adverse reactions such and yeast infections (a high quality product can actually help combat a yeast infection) and fats reduce the absorption of Beta Glucan into the body, rendering it less effective.

Some of the ploys used by marketers to sell their products;

  • General research: This is the old smoke and mirrors. They make the claims that "Beta glucan" can do this and that for you and show you some studies that were conducted on a high quality lab produced material not their own material.
  • Certificates of Analysis: They provide you with a certificate of analysis but it only tested for contaminates, not the actual Beta 1, 3d glucan amount.
  • Micro-sizing: They claim that in order for a Beta Glucan product to be effective it must be ground down in order for the macrophages to engulfed it and become activated. This is the biggest scam there is. While it is true that a baker yeast (which contains Beta Glucan) bud cannot be engulfed by a macrophage, Beta glucan, when properly extracted from a bakers yeast bud can be easily engulfed by macrophages. Picture in your mind a child trying to eat a car, that is the bakers yeast bud and the child is the macrophage. The child obviously cannot eat the macrophage but he can eat a bolt off of the car, the bolt being the Beta 1, 3d glucan. Of course you would have to micro-size a bakers yeast bud, its just way to big and you would also be grinding up the fats and proteins to, the undesirables you would not want in any large amount!

One of the best methods for identify a high quality, safe and effective Beta glucan product is independent testing. Has there been any independent testing conducted on the product? If no then stay away. Further is the independent testing carried out by a respectable lab or university.

Recently a test was conducted on forty of the most popular immune support products, not just Beta glucan but a host of other products to. This test was conducted at the University of Louisville Medical School, a very respected school. The results were shocking, many of the products produced the same immune response as saline solution!
